Springdale Clean Up – Apr 27thPart of being a scout is doing the right thing. One of the right things Pack 273 does is help clean up the outside area at Springdale Church. The Church is our sponsoring organization and allows many dens to meet there weekly. So it is the least we can do. So get out your rakes and your work gloves Thursday April 27th. (Start Time TBD). Helping clean up the environment is always a good thing for a scout to do.

Cub Scout Day Camp – June 9th – 13thDay Camp is a great summer activity for Cub Scouts. It is a week-long experience where Cub Scouts can shoot BB guns, bows and arrows, learn about nature, do leatherwork and crafts, play games, sing songs, and do lots more activities. Leaders and boy alike have a great time.

All registered Cub Scouts going into the 2nd grade but not yet finished with the 5th grade are eligible to attend. Kids who will be starting the 1st grade in the fall are not eligible.

The cost of camp this year is $70 if you get your application in by 4/14. After 4/14, the cost goes up to $80. If you get in your application before 4/14, your scout will also earn the early bird patch.

Webelos Resident Camp / Cub Drive InWebelos Resident Camp is a short-term camping experience designed to introduce Webelos, their leaders, and their parents to a theme-based, summertime camping experience. It’s a memorable 4 days and 3 nights of thrilling and adventurous activities that keep campers excited for months after the closing campfire.

Session 1 = June 26-June 29
Session 2 = July 6-9
Session 3 = July 10-13
Session 4 = July 17-20
Session 5 = July 24-27

Fall Frolic – September

This year’s campout is going to be a great event for our entire Cub Scout Pack to participate in. This is also a great event for the new Cub Scouts and families to get going right away with a major activity. This is open to the entire activity. Even if you do not wish to camp, you can come out for the day on Saturday and have a great time. The cost of this event will be $6 per person. It is tent camping at Camp Crooked Creek near Bernheim Forest. The theme is CSI: Cub Scout Investigators and it will follow a different format than in years past. Outside groups are going to run more of the events so leaders and parents can spend more time doing activities with their children. For more information on Fall Frolic click the following link:

November Campout One of Pack 273’s favorite outdoor activities! Can you guess what it is? You got it, it is a campout!!! Here are all the details:

Who:	All Scouts, Siblings, Akela and Friends All scouts must have an Akela present to camp over night.

RSVP:	Sign up with your Den Leader BY 10-19-06 # of scouts/other youth/adults # of nights camping OR just for the day.

Trunk or Treat – Oct 18thOne of Pack 273’s favorite annual traditions! It is called trunk or treat. The cars line up in the parking lot and open their trunks. The trunks are all decorated with their scary Halloween decorations. The scouts and siblings go trick or treating from trunk to trunk. Make sure your trunk is scary and make sure you come in costume

Why:	To have FUN!!!! Play
Games!!!!	Go Trunk OR Treating!!!!

HOW DO THE GAMES WORK?:

Each Den builds 1 or 2 skill games for everyone to play.
Each Den brings a bag of candy to pass out to the players.
The boys in the Den take turns leading the game (so practice at a Den meeting!!)
The games are set up in the gym.
First we have a quick opening and announcements.

SHOULD WE WEAR COSTUMES?

YES!!! All the boys, siblings, Akelas, Den Leaders, EVERYONE is encouraged to dress up in a costume.
Get in the SPIRIT and have lot’s ‘O’ fun!!!

PARKING

The adults park their cars in the outer lot off Barbour Ln. Park the cars nose to nose so the “Trunks” are facing out.
Decorate your car, play scary music, HAVE FUN!!
Distribute candy to the GHOULS & HOBGOBLINS!!!

Patriot Games – Oct 19th – 21stPatriot Games is a unique and very memorable event that includes camping, competitive events, military displays, shooting sports, Patton Museum tours, activities and MORE! Held every tow years, this event will be attended by as many as 10,000 youth, leaders and visitors from all over the region. This fantastic event will be the highlight of your Scouts’ year! If you’ve been before, it promises to be full of new and exciting events.

Fees:
$12 for campers prior to 10/1/07
$15 for campers after 10/1/07
$8 for Saturday visitors only

Each family is responsible for their own camping equipment, food, etc. Food tent and souvenir tent will also be available.

Opportunity to earn a “Trailblazer” patch by participating in various activities of BBs, Archery, Casting, etc.

Contest for campsites with the best display of the nation’s colors. Bring patriotic items to help compete.

Haunted Woods – October 27thHaunted Woods is a FUN event for Cub Scouts and their families. Kids will collect a bag of goodies. Participants can come out and hike the 2.5-mile trail anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase at the end of the trail.

Dress for the weather. Haunted Woods is held rain or shine. Notice: The terrain of this trail does not allow for strollers or wheelchairs.

Location: Tunnel Mill Scout Reservation – Charlestown, Indiana
Fee: $5.00 per person before October 19th, and $8.00 at the door.
Directions: Go north on Interstate 65 from Louisville to Exit 6. Take that exit onto Indiana 265 East. Go 2 miles to the Indiana 62 exit. Take Indiana 62 East 12 miles to Salem Church Rd. to Tunnel Mill Rd. Turn left onto Tunnel Mill Road and continue 1 mile until you see the camp. entrance. The camp is 20-25 minutes from downtown.

Popcorn Sales – Nov 10thPopcorn Sales is the annual fundraising event for Cub Scouts. Scouts compete to see who can sell the most amount of popcorn, earn prizes, and raise money for scouts. Popcorn sales helps BSA maintain camp facilities like Tunnel Mill and Camp Crooked Creek. Proceeds from popcorn sales reduces fees for BSA camps and activities.

Scouting for Food – Nov 10thScouting For Food is our annual Good Turn for Cub Scouts to help feed families in need in our community. Last year, the district collected and distributed thousands of ponds of canned goods and other food items to local food banks. Our job is to distribute the flyers on November 11th. The boy scouts will be go out the following weekend to pick up the food.
We will meet at Norton School at 9:00 a.m.

Pinewood Derby Car Help Clinic – Dec 20thStating at 6:30 prior to the pack meeting, there will be a help clinic for anyone who has questions on their pinewood derby cars. Come and get answers from a PRO. Also, you can access the resource section of our website to get helpful links on pinewood derby cars.

Gift Exchange – Dec 20thGift Exchange is an annual event for all Cub Scouts and siblings. To participate in the gift exchange, Cub Scouts and siblings need to bring a wrapped gift marked “BOY” or “GIRL”. The maximum value should be no more than $5. If you do not bring a gift, you can not get a gift.

Why:	Celebrate the Holidays and spread Joy
Who:	Any Scout or Sibling (Boy or Girl)
How:	If they want to receive a gift, they need to bring a wrapped gift marked “BOY” or “GIRL”

Pinewood Derby – Jan 18thThe Cub Scout Pinewood Derby is probably the most popular “fun event” that a young Scout will participate. Every year, boys with their parent’s help, build cars of every description to enter at the our Pack Pinewood Derby. The construction of the car is intended to be a parent and son project with the son doing the majority of the work. The parent should supply the advise and limited assistance with the more difficult tasks. Please remember above all that the Pinewood Derby is supposed to be fun for all.

When:	Set Up and Race Day – (Please Help!)
Time:	Set Up- 3:30-5:30 PM Check In – 5:45-6:45 PM Pizza Arrival -6:15 PM Racing starts promptly at 7:00 sharp unless setup has not been completed so please come and help!Pizza -Den Leaders sign up and collect money. Dens responsible for their own drinks, ice, and paper products
Where:	Norton Elementary School Cafe
Who:	All Scouts, Siblings, and Adults can participate by building a car. There will be a Scout, Sibling, and Adult divisions for racing so lets build a car and have fun!
Cost:	Free for scouts, $5.00 per kit for extras Contact Mr. Hartman if you are still in need of kits
Racing Categories:	Most Scout-like, Most Patriotic, and Most Original as well as overall winners for each rank.

Cake Bake and Auction – Feb 21st
The cake bake and auction is an annual fun raising event for the pack. Each of the Scouts and the non baker in the family bake and decorate a cake. The cakes are brought to the pack meeting where the other scouts can vote for their favorite. Also, each scout gets to place bids on other cakes in a silent auction. We have seen many great and creative cakes over the years. This is another great event that is fun for all.

Blue and Gold Banquet – Mar 14thThe Blue and Gold banquet is one of the highlights of the program year. The Blue and Gold banquet is basically the graduation ceremony for each of the scouts. Scouts who successfully completed their achievements earn their rank awards. It brings together the pack’s families for a dinner and an evening of fun. The meal is important, but even more important is the warm, congenial atmosphere created as families enjoy each other’s company. In 1933 “Cub Leaders’ Round Table” suggested Parent / Cub dinners. Soon thereafter, Pack 1 of Michigan City started a tradition of pot-lucks where the dads were to bring utensils made of wood; whittled by the Cub with his dad. In the 1930s father / son ‘bean dinners’ and ‘Cub family dinners’ began to become commonplace. Finally, in 1943 the name “Blue and Gold Banquet” first appeared in BSA literature, and became synonymous with “celebrating the birthday of Scouting.” Pack 273 is one of only a few packs in the District that continue the tradition of having a pot-luck dinner.

Please remember that dishes need to be large enough to feed at least 15 people. The bigger the better! 2. Crock pots and large disposable pans work well for hot foods 3. Label dishes and serving pieces (please bring your own serving pieces and mitts if necessary) 4. Pack provides chicken, paper goods, and table cloths for the food tables only 5. Each den is responsible for decorating their tables in the Patriotic theme and providing table coverings for their tables

Scout-O-Rama Campout at Churchill Downs – Mar 28th – 30thScout-O-Rama is the annual Scout show held on the infield of the world famous Churchill Downs. This great event allows units to set up a fun display showing off the great things that they do. Camping is available for troops and packs on the infield. This is a fun and exciting event for all Scouts and Scouters. It is also a great way for units to raise money for activities and camp by selling tickets.
